Inventum today announced that it has successfully commissioned secure WiFi access for officials, athletes and visitors at the XIX Common Wealth Games 2010 being held in New Delhi, India.
Inventum’s MSC Service Controllers and UNIFY SMP were chosen to secure public Internet access using the WPA2 wireless standard. The solution implements secure mandatory log-on for each network user and also implements lawful monitoring as mandated by the Indian government’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

India’s largest mobile operator, Airtel has selected Inventum’s UNIFY Service Management Platform (SMP) to comply with recent department of telecommunications (DoT) regulations for central authentication of all WiFi users connected to an ISP network.
The regulation specifically seeks to secure all WLAN end-points, including those at retail subscriber’s homes. Apart from authentication, each subscriber is expected to encrypt airwaves using standards such as WPA2.
“It seems that the regulation aims to curb unlawful use of open WiFi access points” said Sachin Mehra, Managing Director of Inventum.
Under the contract Inventum’s UNIFY SMP shall be used to centrally authenticate all qualifying Airtel broadband subscribers. The solution shall also provide a self-care portal & tools for subscribers to easily configure their systems.

The Ministry of Communications, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) India has introduced significant new compliance requirements for all ISPs providing WiFi services.
The regulation goes beyond just public hotspots to include residential and business WiFi applications, extending requirements of centralized management, authentication and provisioning by the ISP even for all customers who may have installed WiFi access points within their premises.

Inventum and Airtel, India’s largest mobile phone operator have entered into an agreement to use the formers OSS/BSS products in a national roll out of retail broadband. The proposed network will create an estimated 150,000 access locations serviced by a variety of technologies including WiFi™, DSL & WiMAX. Airtel will be using Inventum’s UNIFY Service Management Platform to acquire and bill end customers.
The service to be branded CyberPoint brand will help bring high quality, affordable broadband services to retail customers at major public locations, including public call offices (PCO), cyber cafes & airports.
Commenting on the development, Sachin Mehra, Managing Director of Inventum said “we are excited with the opportunity to create one of the world’s largest public access networks. Airtel will be using our next generation MSC controllers and UNIFY billing solutions to realize their vision.”
